Creating a cozy birth space

Have you given any thought to how you want your birth space to feel?

Childbirth is a mental game, and our bodies work best when we feel safe and calm. Creating a cozy, familiar birth space helps to regulate the nervous system and cue the birthing person to relax and focus inward. Whether you are planning a homebirth or a hospital birth, here are some ideas to cozy up your space:

Soft Lighting: Turn off bright overheads and bring in soft, dimmable lighting like string lights, candles, or a salt lamp to create a calming atmosphere.

Comfortable Furniture: It’s nice to have a variety of options for the birthing person and support partners, whether that’s your bed or couch (lined with a waterproof liner), a birthing ball or a padded yoga mat, and soft blankets and pillows to make the space feel inviting and cozy.

Aromatherapy: Use essential oils like lavender or chamomile in a diffuser or on a cotton ball to promote relaxation and reduce stress.

Music: Play soothing music or nature sounds in the background to help create a serene ambiance. I also have every client create an upbeat, happy playlist for times when we need a boost of energy. There’s nothing better than dancing a baby out!

Birth Affirmations: Hang positive birth affirmations on the walls to inspire confidence and strength. You can purchase beautiful premade affirmation cards or make your own. Consider having family and friends make and decorate affirmation cards to remind you of their love and support.

Water: Showers, tubs, and birth pools are wonderful labor tools. If you’re birthing at home: adjust your water heater and test your equipment ahead of time to make sure everything is ready to go. If you’re birthing in a hospital: consider using a birth ball or shower chair in the shower for extra rest and comfort, and enjoy the unlimited hot water!

Personal Touches: Set up personal items like family photos or meaningful objects to create a familiar and comforting atmosphere.

Snacks: My favorite topic!! Have some light, nourishing snacks and drinks available for energy during labor.

Supportive Team: Build a supportive birth team, including doula, to provide guidance and care. This ensures the birthing person feels safe, heard, respected, and empowered during this life changing moment.
