What if I want an epidural?

Let’s talk doulas and epidurals!

One common misconception is that doulas only support unmedicated births. Not true! While research shows that hiring a doula does indeed result in a decrease in epidural use, I support all types of birth and birthing people. Slightly more than half of my clients opt for an epidural, and that’s great! Epidurals provide solid pain management and can be a great tool to use in labor when we call for them at the right time. Whether you’re planning for an unmedicated birth or open to an epidural, doulas still have plenty to add to your birthing experience.

Supporting your birth with an epidural often looks like:

Prenatal education on the risks, benefits, and common questions surrounding epidurals and other labor pain management options

Coaching you through various labor coping strategies (breath work, Hypnobirthing techniques, movement, hydrotherapy…the list goes on!) until your labor is well established and less likely to be slowed or interrupted by an epidural

Answering questions for you and your partner so you know what to expect

Holding your hand or offering encouragement and affirmation while the epidural is placed, or giving your partner tips on the same (standard hospital policies in Central Ohio only allow one support person in the room while epidurals are placed, but I always ask politely to stay with you and am often able to be there during placement)

Using peanut balls and other active positioning strategies to help your baby and your pelvis to keep working together

Providing continuous in person support, affirmation, and encouragement until your baby arrives
